Career Services During Remote Operations

Career Services will continue to support students, seniors, and alumni through video and phone advising appointments, the curation of opportunities in TritonTrack, and virtual professionalization events. The office is committed to providing students and alumni with useful and timely information about the changing employment landscape.

  • All existing appointments have been moved to video or phone call.
  • New phone and video appointments can be scheduled on TritonTrack at any time—they are still unlimited and for life. Walk-in Wednesdays will be postponed, but students may schedule appointments during those hours.
  • Online resources will continue to be added to career.eckerd.edu
  • If you are not searching for summer or full-time positions, use this time to reflect and explore! Take the Strong Interest Inventory and “What Can I Do With This Major?” to understand your interests and refine your professional path.

Employment Opportunities & Employers

  • The Employer Relations and Internships Coordinator, Michael Nordberg, will continue to advocate for students and curate over 100 positions per week in TritonTrack. These positions will be sourced nationwide with a special emphasis on areas where students are from.
  • Students with questions about specific employers may contact Michael at nordbemb@eckerd.edu.
  • A highlight of curated positions and news will continue to be sent in the Weekly Newsletter.
  • Students are encouraged to utilize Career Contacts in TritonTrack and the alumni search in LinkedIn in order to continue informational interviews and, if available, job shadowing with alumni and professionals.
  • The Career Mentor program will continue as normal.

      • Senior Series Day 2: 3/9/20 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
      • Real Talk: Careers As Unexpected Journeys: 4/2/20 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
      • Senior Series Day 3: 4/26/20 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
  • New online events will be offered in place of ones that are postponed: see the Virtual Events page.
  • Virtual career fairs and opportunities for employer contact will be explored and offered.

Student Employment Program

  • New employee paperwork is on hold. No new FWS or SA positions will be offered at this time. Supervisors of summer positions should contact Grant Bailey at baileygj@eckerd.edu.
  • Current supervisors have reviewed positions that are eligible for remote work. Many positions can only take place on-campus due to the nature of the work. Until campus is reopened to students, those positions must remain on hold.
  • HR has confirmed that because students have part-time temporary positions, they do not qualify for government unemployment benefits if their on-campus job is on hold. We will communicate with students if the government changes course on that policy.
  • If you face significant financial challenges due to the pandemic, please contact Financial Aid and let them know about your situation. They are actively exploring funding sources related to the crisis.

Educational Alternatives for Affected Internships:

  • Remote Work: Students are advised to communicate with their internship site supervisor to discuss the possibility of completing a portion of their internship remotely.
  • Informational Interviews: Reach out and conduct phone calls with professionals in your intended industry. Keep a journal of what you learned from the professional about the job, the industry, and any other details you found valuable. Use "Career Contacts" under "Network" tab in TritonTrack for more information and for a list of alumni ready to connect, and visit our Networking page to learn more about informational interviews.
  • Research: Choose three possible job positions you would be interested in. Research the job market for those positions: look at starting salary, discover the requirements for getting into the field, and gather information about daily tasks and necessary skills. O*NET Online and The Occupational Outlook Handbook are excellent resources for this. Next, build a list of employers you would love to work with based on your research.
  • Job Search: Utilize job boards to search for positions. Study job descriptions, and meet virtually with a Career Advisor to work on tailoring resumes and cover letters to specific positions.
  • LinkedIn: Start, review, and improve your LinkedIn profile. Use our LinkedIn Guide as a starting point, and work with a Career Advisor to learn LinkedIn skills.
  • Online Training Courses: Select and complete courses that will give you a new skill.
      • Real World Ready is an online course bundle that covers personal finance, student loans, healthcare, starting a new job, leasing an apartment, graduate school, international student information, finding a job, and accepting an offer. Free with code Eckerd20
      • Udemy has inexpensive courses and you do get a certificate when completed.
      • LinkedIn Learning has a free trial membership for a month for students to utilize. Take courses on business software and tools, graphic design software, leadership and management, and more.
