Job shadowing gives you a behind-the-scenes look at a career by spending time with a professional in the field. You’ll observe their daily responsibilities, ask questions, and get a clearer picture of what the job—and the workplace—are really like.
Start with Your Network
Ask professors, family, friends, or alumni if they know someone working in a field you're curious about.
Connect with Professionals Through LinkedIn
Search for alumni or professionals with jobs you're interested in. Reach out with a short, polite message asking if they'd be open to a brief shadowing experience.
Search for Local Organizations
Look up local companies, nonprofits, clinics, labs, or businesses that align with your interests. Visit their websites to learn about what they do—and don’t be afraid to send a brief, professional email asking if they ever host college students for job shadowing. Even if they don't advertise shadowing, they may still say yes!

With Pinellas County Government, students spent the day in the field learning about beach nourishment projects, RTKs, and taking water-line shorts of wave run-ups. They were able to learn about relationships between the County, coastal municipalities, and residents as a whole, as well as see the policy and science side of environmental work.
